Your options between Heathrow and Gatwick
Heathrow and Gatwick sit on opposite sides of London, with no direct rail connection between them. Whether you are connecting between flights or repositioning for a departure from the other airport, there are three ways to make the journey.
- Private transfer. A direct journey from the arrivals hall of one airport to the terminal door of the other. No train changes and no carrying luggage between platforms, and your fare is confirmed when you book.
- Coach. National Express runs coaches between the two airports. They can cost less, but they use the same M25 and leave at scheduled times.
- Train. There is no direct railway. Travelling by train normally means going through central London and changing services, which is hard work with several suitcases.
App-based rides are priced by demand at the moment you request them. A pre-booked transfer has its fare agreed in advance. If you would call this a car service or an airport-to-airport taxi, it is the same thing: one car, your party only.
Heathrow to Gatwick transfers
Landing at Heathrow and flying on from Gatwick? This is how your pickup works at Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5.
- We track your flight, so a delay does not leave you without a driver.
- Your driver enters the car park 30 minutes after you land and waits at the arrivals meeting point of your terminal with your name on a tablet or name board.
- Waiting time is not charged during the first hour after your flight lands. That hour is there for leaving the aircraft, immigration and baggage reclaim.
- The Heathrow car park charge is paid by the passenger. Ask us for the current charges when you request your quote.
Tell us whether you are leaving from Gatwick’s North or South Terminal. It is on your airline’s booking confirmation, and we take you to the right door. More detail in our Heathrow pickup instructions and Heathrow terminal guide.

How far is Heathrow from Gatwick?
Heathrow is west of central London, in Hillingdon. Gatwick is south of London, in West Sussex. Journey distance varies depending on the Heathrow terminal, Gatwick terminal and route taken. The usual road route uses the M25 and the M23.
Journey times between Heathrow and Gatwick
The M25 is one of the busiest motorways in the UK, so journey times vary a great deal with the day and the hour. The figures below are typical ranges for guidance only. They are not guaranteed journey times.
| Conditions | Typical journey time (guide only) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning / off-peak | 55 to 70 mins | Usually the fastest time to travel |
| Daytime off-peak | 70 to 90 mins | Normal daytime traffic conditions |
| Peak hours | 90 to 120 mins | M25 congestion can significantly increase travel time |
| Bank holidays / school holidays | 90 to 130 mins | Extra time should always be allowed |
If the transfer is part of a connecting journey, allow enough time for immigration, baggage collection, the road journey, check-in, bag drop, security and reaching your departure gate.
How much time should you allow between flights?
It depends on whether you need to collect checked luggage, check in again, travel with children or need assistance. The times below are general guidance to help you plan. They are not a guarantee that you will make a connection, which also depends on your airline’s check-in and bag-drop deadlines, on immigration and baggage reclaim on the day, and on the traffic.
- Checked luggage: we suggest at least 3 hours 30 minutes between landing at Heathrow and departing from Gatwick.
- Hand luggage only and already checked in: we suggest at least 2 hours 30 minutes.
- Families or passengers who need assistance: add another 30 to 45 minutes.
- Long-haul departure: allow additional time for security and boarding.
The same thinking applies from Gatwick to Heathrow. Give us your arrival time and your departure time when you request your quote, and we will help you judge whether the connection is realistic. Your airline’s own check-in deadlines always come first, and D&J cannot guarantee that you will make a connecting flight. If your two flights are on separate tickets, check your airlines’ rules before relying on a tight connection.
